Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)

weee The Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations came into force in 2007. This legislation is in place to ensure that the UK complies with the European Union (EU) WEEE Directive.

The regulations require all producers, retailers and distributors of electrical and electronic equipment to tell customers how they can dispose of these products once they have reached the end of their working lives.

There are five categories of WEEE:

weee
  1. Large Electrical Appliances (such as washing machines, dishwashers, cookers, microwaves and tumble dryers)

  2. Small Electrical Appliances (such as irons, hairdryers, tools, video games, IT and telephone equipment)

  3. Fridges & Freezers

  4. Fluorescent Tubes (including sodium lamps and energy saving light bulbs)

  5. Televisions and Monitors (including computer monitors and screens)

The legislation affects both business (i.e. universities and colleges) and individuals (i.e. students).

Students can find out where they can recycle personal electrical and electronic equipment on our Sort It website.

Universities and Colleges can find out more about how the WEEE regulations affect them by downloading either the Waste Aware Business WEEE Guide or the EAUC WEEE Guidance document.
