Recycling paper, cans and plastic bottles
paperGlasgow Metropolitan College introduced recycling facilities for paper, aluminium cans and plastic bottles across all five campuses in August 2007. The recycling facilities are operated in partnership with Glasgow City Council Environmental Protection Services.

Tree Recycling
treeGlasgow Metropolitan College’s School of Design are working with the Glasgow City Council Parks Department to finalise a project that will see felled, mature trees, previously disposed of in landfill sites, being recycled at the Colleges Dornoch Street Annex.

The trees will be processed by a mobile saw unit before being dried in a humidifier kiln and stored on site. Although significant capital investment will be required to install the kiln this cost will be offset by saving on timber purchasing. The trees supplied by the Parks Department will include mixed hardwood, exotic species and Scottish native trees which would normally cost approximately £750 per cubic metre. The college will be able to process the tress for approximately £50 per cubic metre resulting in significant long term cost savings.

It is hoped that this project will provide a working model of sustainability within the college. Students will view the process first hand, will be able to work with high quality materials which are produced locally with no impact on tropical forests and will create beautiful objects for future use – including seating for public parks.
